Carara sits in a narrow band where the dry forests of the Pacific northwest blur into the humid lowlands of the south, and that transition gives you a genuinely unusual mix of species in a single morning's walk.

The main loop trails are flat, well-maintained, and wide enough that you can hear what's happening on both sides of the canopy without fighting through undergrowth — a welcome relief compared to some Costa Rican parks. Dawn is when it matters most. Arrive at the gate as it opens and the forest is loud and active; by nine o'clock the heat presses down and things quieten considerably.

The Scarlet Macaws are the reason most people come, and they won't let you down. The roost flights at dusk, when dozens of pairs wheel overhead in that unmistakable red-and-blue flash, are one of those moments that feels almost theatrical. You'll hear them long before you see them.

For the Bare-necked Umbrellabird, patience and luck are both required — they're present but never guaranteed, and I'd suggest hiring a local guide who knows the reliable fruiting trees. Guides are available at the park entrance and are worth every colón for the understory specialists like Riverside Wren and Black-bellied Hummingbird, which are easy to walk straight past.

A quick stop at the Tárcoles River bridge before entering the park adds waterbirds and the spectacle of American Crocodiles in absurd numbers. Most visitors stay in Jacó or Tárcoles village rather than the park itself, with San José an easy two-hour drive if you prefer a day trip.

Bring rubber boots for the wet season trails and book a guide in advance between December and April, when tour groups crowd the main path by mid-morning.
