Wildlands Adventure Zoo sits right in the centre of Emmen, a short walk from the train station, which makes it unusually easy to reach without a car.

The zoo reinvented itself in 2016 after a significant redevelopment of the old Noorder Dierenpark, and the result is a genuinely immersive layout built around three broad biomes — Jungola, Nortica, and Serenga — each with its own distinct atmosphere, from humid tropical forest to open African savanna.

Serenga is the showpiece. The African plains section gives lions, giraffes, and zebras considerably more space than you would find in an older European zoo, and the sight lines are designed so animals and visitors share sight of one another across open grassland rather than through bars or thick glass. It is honest, well-considered enclosure design.

The Biochron experience is a theatrical walk-through that attempts to tell the story of life on Earth; it is better suited to children than adults but does not feel cynical about it. Wildlands participates in several European Endangered Species Programmes, with particular attention to African ungulates and big cats.

Crowds peak sharply on Dutch school holidays and summer weekends. The zoo draws around half a million visitors a year across only 27 hectares, so Saturday afternoons in July feel genuinely busy around the lion viewing platform and the Jungola pools. Feeding demonstrations — check the board at the entrance for the day's schedule — draw the largest gatherings, so arriving early gives you a clearer view.

The paths are wide and pushchair-friendly throughout. Allow a full day; a half-day leaves Nortica feeling rushed.

Arrive at opening time on a weekday and bring a light waterproof, as the forest zones trap humidity even in mild weather.
