Ranomafana National Park

Ranomafana National Park is one of Madagascar's most rewarding wilderness experiences, though it asks something of you in return. The park sits within a dense, dripping cloud forest in the southern highlands, where the air is noticeably cooler and damper than the lowland parks further north. Moss-covered trees rise above steep ravines, and the Namorona River cuts through the landscape with a satisfying roar after rain.

It feels ancient and layered, the kind of place where you slow your pace without being asked.

The park was established in 1991 largely to protect the golden bamboo lemur, discovered here just a few years earlier, and spotting one clinging to a bamboo stalk in the morning mist remains a genuinely thrilling moment. You are also likely to encounter the greater bamboo lemur, red-fronted brown lemurs, and if you are patient and quiet, the nocturnal aye-aye on specialist night walks.

The forest floor and canopy are rich with endemic birds, chameleons, and frogs — a trained local guide is not optional, it is essential for seeing anything at all.

The gateway town is Fianarantsoa, roughly 65 kilometres north along the RN7, and most visitors hire a taxi-brousse or private vehicle from there. Entry fees and mandatory guide fees are paid at the park office near the village of Ranomafana. After a long day on the trails, the natural hot springs near the park entrance offer a welcome soak, though facilities are modest.

Paths vary in difficulty; the Circuit Varecia and Talatakely trail system suit most fitness levels, but rain makes sections genuinely slippery.

Visit during the dry season between April and November, bring waterproofs regardless, and wear sturdy ankle-supporting boots.
