Statue of Liberty
New York City, USAattractions
Standing on Liberty Island and gazing up at the copper-green figure rising 93 metres above the harbour, it is genuinely difficult not to feel something. The Statue of Liberty carries an enormous weight of history and symbolism, and being in her presence — rather than viewing her from the shore — adds a dimension that photos simply cannot replicate. The island itself is well maintained, with informative exhibits around the base telling the story of the statue's construction and the millions of immigrants who passed by her on the way into a new life.
There are three main ticket tiers to know before you go: general access to Liberty Island and the grounds, a pedestal pass that gets you inside the base and up to an outdoor viewing platform, and the crown tickets, which require climbing 354 steps through a narrow spiral staircase and book out months in advance. If seeing the crown is your goal, plan well ahead — this is not something you can sort out on the day. The pedestal view is genuinely impressive and far easier to secure.
The ferry departs from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan and also stops at Ellis Island, which pairs brilliantly as a half-day itinerary. Arrive at Battery Park early — by 8am if possible — to beat the queues that form quickly in summer. The crossing takes around 15 minutes and the views back toward the Manhattan skyline are spectacular in their own right.
Summers are hot and crowded; spring and autumn offer more comfortable temperatures and thinner crowds without sacrificing the light. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and go midweek if your schedule allows.
