Times Square is one of those places that genuinely earns its reputation, even if it takes you by surprise the first time. The sheer density of light, sound, and movement along the stretch of Broadway between West 42nd and West 47th Streets is unlike anything else in the world. At night especially, the illuminated billboards stack so high and shine so intensely that the sky effectively disappears — it is overwhelming in the best possible way, and oddly addictive once you surrender to the chaos. That said, it pays to go in with realistic expectations. The footpaths are perpetually packed, street performers and costumed characters work the crowds aggressively for tips, and the immediate area is lined with chain restaurants and souvenir shops rather than anything particularly local or interesting. The real value here is the spectacle itself, not what surrounds it. For a slightly calmer vantage point, head to the TKTS booth steps on the northern end of Duffy Square — you get a good elevated view of the whole strip without being swept along in the thickest of the foot traffic. Getting there is straightforward: the N, Q, R, W, 1, 2, 3, 7, and A, C, E subway lines all converge nearby, making it one of the most accessible spots in the city. Walking from Midtown hotels takes only a few minutes in most directions. If you are visiting in winter, the wind tunnel effect between the buildings is brutal, so dress accordingly. New Year's Eve draws enormous crowds and requires barriers, ticketed areas, and hours of waiting in the cold, which most locals sensibly avoid. For a more comfortable experience, visit on a weekday evening in autumn when the energy is still electric but the footpaths are at least negotiable.
