Vancouver
Vancouver, Canadacities
Vancouver sits at a remarkable crossroads — mountains behind you, ocean in front, and a skyline that somehow manages not to look out of place between the two. It's a genuinely liveable city, and that quality comes through when you're wandering it as a visitor. The pace is unhurried compared to Toronto, the food scene punches well above its weight, and the outdoor access is almost unfairly good for a city this size.
Start your time in Gastown, the oldest neighbourhood, where cobblestone streets and Victorian brick buildings sit alongside decent cocktail bars and indie shops. It bleeds into Chinatown, one of the largest in North America, where you'll find proper dim sum on Pender Street and the remarkable Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden tucked behind a modest entrance. The West End, just below Stanley Park, has a relaxed residential energy and easy access to the Seawall, a flat waterfront path that loops the entire park — around ten kilometres if you do the full circuit. Granville Island is worth a morning for its public market, cheese, fresh bread, and general atmosphere, though it gets genuinely packed on weekends.
The food across the city reflects its large South Asian, East Asian, and Filipino communities — Richmond, just to the south and easily reached by SkyTrain, is arguably the better destination for Chinese and Japanese food than the city centre itself. Don't skip it.
Transport is straightforward. The SkyTrain connects the airport directly to downtown in around twenty-five minutes, and the bus network is reliable. Driving, however, is a headache, and parking expensive.
Rain is a real factor from October through March — locals wear waterproof layers rather than umbrellas. The window between June and September offers the most reliable weather and the best reason to be outdoors. Bring comfortable walking shoes; the Seawall and neighbourhoods reward time on foot.
