El Salvador Travel Guide

Small Central American country with volcanic peaks and Pacific surf

OverviewCitiesAttractionsToursArticles

El Salvador is Central America's smallest nation, but dense with geography — volcanoes, cloud forests, and black-sand beaches pack into a country you can cross in a few hours. It's off most tourist radars, which means cheaper prices, fewer crowds, and a rawer experience than its neighbours.

The country has rebuilt itself over the past decade. Gang violence still exists in certain urban areas, but tourist zones and rural regions are generally safe if you stay aware. Most travellers skip through en route to Guatemala or Nicaragua, but staying a week reveals something distinct — Mayan ruins, colonial towns, and some of Central America's best coffee plantations.

Language is Spanish. English is spoken in tourist areas but less common outside them. Infrastructure is decent for the region: buses are cheap and frequent, food is authentic and inexpensive, and the locals are straightforward.

Highlights

  1. Volcanic landscapes and hikingSeveral active volcanoes with hiking trails. Views of crater lakes and lush valleys from multiple peaks across the country.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
November to March (dry season) is most reliable. April–May and September–October are shoulder months with fewer tourists and lower prices, though rain is common afternoons. Avoid September for hurricane risk.
Do I need a visa?+
Most nationalities get 90 days on arrival. Check your passport's issuing country against current rules; visas are rarely refused but entry requirements shift occasionally.
Is it safe for tourists?+
Tourist zones and rural areas are generally safe. Avoid gang-controlled urban neighbourhoods (your hotel staff will advise). Don't flash valuables, avoid walking alone at night in cities, use authorised taxis. Crime exists but isn't directed at tourists.
How much does food and lodging cost?+
Budget hostels run $10–15/night; mid-range hotels $30–60. Meals at comedores cost $2–4; restaurants $6–12. Overall daily spend: $25–40 backpacker, $60–100 comfortable.
What should I pack?+
Rain jacket and quick-dry clothes (afternoon downpours year-round). Hiking boots if you're climbing volcanoes. Sunscreen and hat essential. Lightweight layers for cooler highlands. Spanish phrasebook helpful outside tourist areas.
