Spice-scented island where reefs meet rainforest drama

OverviewCities2Attractions2ToursArticles

Grenada punches above its weight. The nutmeg terraces roll inland from beaches that actually have sand—not the mashed-up tourist fantasy. St George's is a proper working port town, coloured gable houses stacked on a hillside, not a theme park version.

The reefs offshore are legitimate draws: decent visibility, reasonable crowds, fish life. But what keeps people here isn't the postcard moments. It's the blend of Caribbean ease with genuine Creole cooking, rum distilleries that still function as actual distilleries, and the fact that most beaches have exactly the number of people you'll find on a beach at 10am on a Tuesday.

Two hours flying time from Trinidad, so it works as a standalone trip or as part of a wider Eastern Caribbean loop. The hurricane season runs through November, which affects pricing and schedules but also means fewer cruise-ship queues.

Highlights

  1. St George's waterfrontWorking port town with colonial architecture, fish market chaos, and reliable local restaurants without premium markup.
  2. Reef diving and snorkellingCoral formations and fish life visible without serious technical training. Visibility improves May through November.
  3. Nutmeg plantationsWorking estates inland where you see how the spice is dried and processed—not museum exhibits, actual agriculture.
  4. Grand Anse BeachThe main sand strip. Decent length, sheltered bay, enough shade trees to avoid paying for beach clubs.
  5. Spice-based cookingNutmeg, cinnamon, cloves woven into daily food. Local restaurants and markets reflect this better than resort menus.
  6. Island hikingRainforest tracks to viewpoints without requiring mountaineering skills. Muddy in wet season, worth it for visibility.

Everything you need to know

When should I actually go?+
May–November offers lower prices and fewer tourists, though rain is frequent. December–April is drier and busier. Hurricane risk peaks August–October but direct hits are rare; flights and ferries still operate normally.
Do I need a visa?+
Citizens of most Commonwealth countries, the US, Canada, and EU nations get 90 days on arrival. Check your passport and nationality before booking flights; exemptions do vary.
What's a realistic daily budget?+
Budget travellers: £25–35 (guesthouse, street food, free beaches). Mid-range: £60–90 (modest hotel, local restaurants). Comfortable: £150+ (resort, dining out regularly).
Is it safe?+
Crime exists in parts of St George's and outlying districts; stick to main tourist routes and avoid walking alone after dark. Standard Caribbean caution applies. Petty theft happens but violent crime against tourists is uncommon.
What gear matters most?+
Reef shoes (sharp coral), lightweight waterproof layer (tropical showers), strong sun protection. Roads are potholed; a rental car needs good tyres if you're exploring inland. Malaria isn't present; dengue mosquito risk is low but bring repellent anyway.
