Small island, serious diving and rum culture

Barbados punches above its weight. It's the easternmost Caribbean island, which means steadier trade winds, fewer hurricanes, and a different vibe from its neighbours. The island's been independent since 1966 and it shows—there's a genuine national character here, not just resort-speak.
The economy still relies on tourism, but it's matured past the all-inclusive sprawl. You'll find good food that isn't overpriced, reliable infrastructure, and locals who aren't exhausted by having to perform friendliness. The south and west coasts have the calm beaches; the east is wilder and cheaper.
Underwater, the reefs are properly intact. Wreck diving is excellent—there are at least 20 accessible wrecks, including a freighter and a tugboat. Even snorkelling will show you brain coral and parrotfish. If you're not into water, the island's small enough to explore the interior sugarcane plantations and rum distilleries in a day or two.
