Italy rewards the traveller who ignores the guidebook queue and gets lost in the back streets. Yes, Rome and Florence are packed. Yes, Venice is expensive and sinking. But the bones of Western civilisation are still visible here, and the food tastes like it should.

The country is long and regional—Sicilian pizza is not Neapolitan pizza, and both will tell you they're superior. Northern cities like Milan move fast. Southern towns move at siesta speed. Coastal regions and mountains offer escape routes from the crowds if you plan around peak season.

Expect to spend money. Expect crowds in summer. Expect outstanding coffee and wine that costs less than water. And expect to argue with other travellers about whether you should have skipped the famous bit and gone to the quiet bit instead.

Highlights

  1. RomeAncient ruins, Renaissance churches, espresso culture, and tourist crush. Walk it on foot. Plan early mornings.
  2. Florence & TuscanyArt galleries, Renaissance architecture, rolling hills, Chianti wine. Book galleries in advance or spend hours queuing.
  3. VeniceFloating city of canals and crowds. Skip summer if possible. Visit in shoulder season for a chance to breathe.
  4. Amalfi Coast & CampaniaSteep coastal towns, Pompeii ruins, volcanic landscapes. Naples has excellent street food and raw energy.
  5. DolomitesAlpine mountains, hiking trails, small villages. Completely different Italy. Best for outdoor types and silence.
  6. Adriatic & Southern RegionsLess-travelled coastlines, Sardinian beaches, smaller towns. Quieter than the northwest but with fewer English speakers.

Everything you need to know

When should I visit?+
April–May and September–October. Summer (July–August) is hot, crowded, and pricey. Winter is quiet but many smaller attractions close. Avoid Easter and bank holidays when everything doubles in price.
Do I need a visa?+
EU/EEA citizens need ID only. US, UK, Australia, Canada, NZ get 90 days visa-free. Non-EU visitors should check Schengen requirements before travel.
How much will it cost?+
€25–40/day (hostel, street food, free attractions). €70–100/day (budget hotel, pizza, museums). €150+/day (comfort hotels, restaurants, tours). Major attractions add significant cost.
Is it safe?+
Generally safe in cities. Pickpocketing is common on trains and crowded transport—watch your belongings. South is fine but some southern cities have scams targeting tourists. Use common sense.
What should I pack?+
Comfortable walking shoes (you'll walk constantly). Light layers—weather varies by region and season. Sun protection. A small day backpack. Grumpy shoes for cobblestones. Water bottle. Minimal baggage—stairs, narrow streets, and trains.
