Greece hits differently when you're standing in front of the thing itself—the Parthenon isn't a postcard. Athens is chaotic, loud, and worth a few days; the islands range from tourist-heavy Santorini to quieter Cycladic alternatives. The food's genuinely good, the light is golden, and you can move around cheaply once you're there.

Most travellers stick to Athens and the main islands (Crete, Santorini, Mykonos). That's fine—they're accessible for a reason. But the Peloponnese, Thessaly, and smaller Aegean islands have fewer crowds and better value. Summer is hot and rammed; shoulder seasons let you actually breathe.

Greece is straightforward for Western travellers: the infrastructure works, English is widely spoken in tourist areas, and your money goes far outside peak season. Budget accordingly—€20–30 a day is possible, but comfort costs more. Ferry networks connect the islands, though schedules shift with the season.

Highlights

  1. Athens and the AcropolisAncient sites packed tight; museum-grade artefacts; modern city chaos below the marble.
  2. Santorini and the CalderaVolcanic crater, sunset views, whitewashed towns. Tourist-heavy, pricey, but visually arresting.
  3. CreteLargest island; quieter beaches; Minoan archaeology; less Instagram-focused than Santorini.
  4. Meteora (Thessaly)Rock pillars topped with monasteries. Otherworldly landscape, fewer tourists than the islands.
  5. Island-hopping (Aegean)Ferry routes link dozens of islands; mix of nightlife, swimming, and genuine local villages.
  6. PeloponneseMycenae, Sparta, Olympia. Classical sites with better accommodation rates than Athens or major islands.

Everything you need to know

When should I go?+
May–Jun and Sep–Oct are ideal: warm, less packed, reasonable prices. July–Aug is scorching and rammed with package tourists; December–March is quiet but rainy and many island ferries reduce frequency.
Do I need a visa?+
EU/EEA/UK citizens can stay 90 days visa-free. US, Canada, Australia, NZ also get 90 days. Check current rules; non-EU citizens should verify online.
How much will it cost?+
€20–30/day for hostels, street food, basic ferries. €60–100/day for mid-range hotels, decent meals, island-hopping. Budget €150+ for comfort or peak-season travel.
Is it safe?+
Standard petty theft in Athens and tourist areas; keep valuables secure. Violent crime is rare. Medical care is solid. Use common sense as you would anywhere.
What should I pack?+
Sun protection (hat, cream, sunglasses). Comfortable walking shoes for marble/cobbles. Light layers—islands cool at night. Plastic bags for wet swimmers. Reef-safe sunscreen; many beaches ban certain chemicals.
