Limestone islands where history crumbles into Mediterranean salt air

Malta is small enough to cross in an hour, dense enough to spend weeks. Three millennia of empires left their thumbprints here—Phoenician temples, Arab fortifications, British colonial buildings—layered into tight harbours and honey-coloured villages. The islands are busy, especially summer, but drop below the tourist routes and you'll find quiet coves and local bars where English is a second language.

Geographically, you're closer to Libya than Italy, which shapes everything: the light, the food, the pace. Valletta is genuinely worth a day or two; Mdina's medieval streets are atmospheric but crowded. Most people skip Gozo, which is quieter and greener. Swimming, snorkelling and diving are serious here—the water is clear and warm most of the year.

It's expensive for southern Europe, and accommodation fills fast. Getting around without a car is doable but buses are chaotic. You'll either love the density and history or find it claustrophobic. There's no in-between.

Highlights

  1. Valletta's harboursThree-sided fortified city facing Grand Harbour. Walk the streets, watch ferries, sit in waterfront cafés.
  2. Mdina and RabatMedieval walled town (quiet early morning) and its sprawling neighbour. Narrow streets, churches, catacombs below.
  3. Temple sitesNeolithic stone temples across both islands—Ħaġar Qim, Mnajdra, Tarxien—predate Stonehenge by centuries.
  4. Gozo islandQuieter, greener neighbour. Smaller scale, fishing villages, coastal cliffs, Ta' Ċenċ limestone landscape.
  5. Mediterranean diving and swimmingClear warm water, wreck sites, reefs. Good for all levels. Summer heat drives crowds to the sea.
  6. Local food and wineFtira bread, rabbit stew, lampuki fish. Wine production is small-scale. Markets are loud and chaotic.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
May–Jun or Sep–Oct for warm water and fewer crowds. July–Aug is hot and rammed. Winter (Nov–Mar) is mild but can be rainy; many beach bars close.
Do I need a visa?+
EU/EEA citizens and many others get 90 days visa-free. Check your passport; Malta uses the Schengen rules.
Is it safe?+
Generally safe for tourists. Petty theft happens in crowded areas. Avoid walking alone at night in quieter villages.
How much does it cost per day?+
Budget accommodation and local food runs €35–50/day. Mid-range (decent hotel, restaurant meals) €70–100/day. Eating and drinking out is pricey.
Can I get by without a car?+
Yes, but buses are unreliable and crowded. Taxis and ride-shares fill the gap. For Gozo, a ferry from Valletta; car hire there is useful.
