Limestone islands where history crumbles into Mediterranean salt air

Malta is small enough to cross in an hour, dense enough to spend weeks. Three millennia of empires left their thumbprints here—Phoenician temples, Arab fortifications, British colonial buildings—layered into tight harbours and honey-coloured villages. The islands are busy, especially summer, but drop below the tourist routes and you'll find quiet coves and local bars where English is a second language.
Geographically, you're closer to Libya than Italy, which shapes everything: the light, the food, the pace. Valletta is genuinely worth a day or two; Mdina's medieval streets are atmospheric but crowded. Most people skip Gozo, which is quieter and greener. Swimming, snorkelling and diving are serious here—the water is clear and warm most of the year.
It's expensive for southern Europe, and accommodation fills fast. Getting around without a car is doable but buses are chaotic. You'll either love the density and history or find it claustrophobic. There's no in-between.
