Turkey straddles Europe and Asia, which means you'll find Ottoman architecture in Istanbul alongside Greek temples in the Aegean, and desert landscapes in Cappadocia within a few hours of Mediterranean beaches. It's genuinely diverse—not marketed diversity, actual variety in what you see and do.

The infrastructure is solid for independent travel. Buses are cheap and frequent, cities are walkable, and locals are used to tourists without being overly performative about it. You can eat well for next to nothing if you eat where locals eat.

Expect crowds in Istanbul and at major ancient sites. The Cappadocia balloon trips and Turquoise Coast boat tours are popular for reason, but they're also busy. Go in shoulder seasons if you can.

Highlights

  1. IstanbulMedieval mosques, Ottoman palaces, and a working bazaar that's still chaotic and genuine. Straddles two continents.
  2. CappadociaFairy-tale rock formations, cave dwellings, and hot-air balloons at sunrise. Otherworldly landscape you can hike or drive through.
  3. Ephesus & the Aegean CoastOne of the Mediterranean's best-preserved Greco-Roman ruins, plus nearby beaches and smaller archaeological sites dotted along the shore.
  4. Turquoise CoastMediterranean and Aegean bays with clear water, quiet coves, and coastal villages. Gulet sailing is popular but pricey; smaller boats are cheaper.
  5. Black Sea RegionGreener, less touristy than the south. Mountain scenery, tea plantations, and traditional villages if you're after something less crowded.
  6. Travertine Terraces (Denizli)Brilliant white mineral pools cascading down mountainside. Touristy but visually stunning. Most go for sunrise to avoid the worst crowds.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
April–May and September–October. Summer (Jun–Aug) is hot, crowded, and pricey. Winter (Dec–Feb) sees rain and closures in the interior. Spring and autumn are reliably warm without the mayhem.
Do I need a visa?+
Most Western passport holders (UK, US, Australia, Canada, EU) get 90 days visa-free on arrival. Check your specific nationality. Apply for an e-Visa online before travel—it takes 10 minutes.
How much does it cost per day?+
Budget travellers manage on $25–35 (hostels, street food, local buses). Mid-range $60–100 (decent hotel, restaurant meals, some tours). Comfortable $150+. Cappadocia balloons, gulet cruises, and Istanbul touristy spots push costs up fast.
Is it safe?+
Generally safe for tourists in main cities and popular regions. Petty theft and scams happen in busy areas like Istanbul bazaars—watch bags and money. Avoid southeast border regions. Standard travel sense applies.
What should I pack?+
Comfortable walking shoes (cobblestones everywhere). Light layers—mornings and evenings cool even in summer. Modest clothing helps in conservative areas; shoulders and knees covered when visiting mosques. Sunscreen and hat essential in Cappadocia.
