Egypt rewards those willing to endure Cairo's chaos and Nile-side bureaucracy. The pharaonic sites—Giza, Luxor, the Valley of the Kings—are genuinely staggering, though crowds and persistent hawkers can numb the experience. Most travellers spend 2–3 weeks chasing temples and tombs along the river, then either head to Red Sea resorts for reef diving or push south to Aswan.

Visit during winter months (Nov–Feb) when heat is manageable. Summer brings temperatures above 40°C and thinner tourist crowds, but expect exhaustion. The Nile itself is less dramatic than myth suggests—dams and irrigation have tamed it—but the landscape either side remains harsh, hypnotic desert.

Security has improved significantly, though travel advisories remain cautious for certain regions (Sinai, Western Desert). Stick to main tourist routes and use common sense. Negotiation is baked into the culture; treat it as sport, not stress.

Highlights

  1. Giza & CairoPyramids and the Great Sphinx dominate, though crowds are relentless. The Egyptian Museum holds treasures. Cairo itself is loud, polluted, chaotic—essential but exhausting.
  2. LuxorKarnak Temple, Luxor Temple, Valley of the Kings. The east bank heaves with tour groups; the west bank quieter. Best base for pharaonic sightseeing.
  3. Valley of the KingsPainted tombs carved into rock. Hyperion, Tutankhamun, Ramesses. Most are stunning inside; expect tight, hot passages and modest entry fees per tomb.
  4. Red Sea Diving & SnorkellingHurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh offer reliable coral reefs and marine life. Equipment rental widely available. Can feel touristy but genuinely good underwater.
  5. Aswan & Abu SimbelSmaller, cleaner than Luxor. Abu Simbel's colossal rock temples lie south, visited by tour or speedboat. Less crowded than northern sites.
  6. Nile River JourneysFelucca sailing and cruise boats run Cairo–Aswan. Slower felucca offers authentic pace; cruises more comfortable. Spectacular at sunset.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
November to February. Daytime temps 15–25°C. March–May and September–October are shoulder seasons—still hot but fewer crowds. June–August unbearable (40°C+) unless you're coping with minimal competition and lower prices.
Do I need a visa?+
Most nationalities get a tourist visa on arrival (passport required) or apply beforehand. Check current entry requirements before travel. Note: entry through Rafah (Gaza) currently closed; use mainstream borders (Cairo airport, Suez).
How much per day?+
Budget traveller: £15–25 (local transport, street food, cheap accommodation). Mid-range: £40–70 (decent hotels, restaurant meals, guided tours). Comfortable: £100+. Site entry fees add up fast.
Is it safe?+
Tourist corridors (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Red Sea resorts) are patrolled and reasonably safe. Avoid Sinai Peninsula and Western Desert. Street crime rare; petty theft and scams common. Use caution, not paranoia.
What should I pack?+
High-SPF sunscreen (non-negotiable), wide-brimmed hat, light layers, sturdy walking shoes, electrolyte tablets. Cotton clothing essential. Bring copies of your passport. Small bills useful for tips and small vendors.
