The north-east trades blow steadily across Antigua from December through April, typically sitting in the 15–22 knot range and kicking up a lively chop on the eastern shores. Most charter routes run downwind or on a comfortable reach, working anti-clockwise around the island so the wind stays behind you for the best part. Passages between anchorages are short — rarely more than two hours — which makes this a forgiving destination for sailors who want movement without exhaustion. Barbuda, 28 miles to the north, is a longer day sail or an easy overnight, and the payoff is a near-deserted lagoon of absurd turquoise colour with frigate bird colonies nesting close by. English Harbour and the adjoining Falmouth Harbour are the social and logistical heart of everything. Nelson's Dockyard is genuinely worth an afternoon ashore — Georgian naval architecture kept in decent condition, with chandleries, rum bars, and provisioning shops nearby. Jolly Harbour on the west coast offers a full marina, a supermarket, and fuel if you're mid-circuit. Rendezvous Bay and Nonsuch Bay on the quieter east side give you proper seclusion when you need it, though the swell wraps in at some eastern anchorages, so use two anchors and set them carefully. Charter bases cluster around Falmouth Harbour, and the bareboat fleets from Sunsail and Antigua Yacht Club Marina are well-maintained. Customs clearance is straightforward for CARICOM visitors; others should budget time on arrival at Jolly Harbour or English Harbour for the usual paperwork shuffle. Provisioning is solid but not cheap — bring spices and specialty items from home. Best months are January through March; avoid arriving during Sailing Week in late April unless racing crowds and packed anchorages are your idea of a good time.
