Eastern Caribbean, Barbadosactivities
Barbados sits at the windward edge of the Eastern Caribbean, which tells you everything about the crossing to get here. The Atlantic trade winds hit the east coast uninterrupted from Africa — consistent fifteen to twenty-five knots from the east-northeast for most of the season — making the approach from Europe or the Canaries a boisterous but dependable downwind run. Once you arrive, most of the sailing happens along the sheltered west and south coasts, where the island itself blocks the worst of the trades and leaves you with manageable swells and reliable afternoon breezes.
Carlisle Bay is the natural starting point. The anchorage off Bridgetown holds reasonable ground in three to six metres, and the wreck diving below your keel is genuinely impressive — half a dozen vessels scattered across sand, including the Stavronikita, a Greek freighter sitting upright in twenty-five metres. You can anchor, dive, and be eating flying fish cutters at a rum shop within the hour. Provisioning in Bridgetown is straightforward compared to smaller island stops; the supermarkets are well stocked and chandlery is available, though not cheap. Customs and immigration are efficient, and most charter skippers complete check-in at the Bridgetown Port Authority without drama.
Day sailing north to Speightstown or south toward Silver Sands keeps things manageable. Night passages offshore toward St Lucia or St Vincent are common for those continuing the arc westward — the trades push you nicely on a broad reach. Charter bases operate out of the Careenage and Bridgetown Harbour; bareboating is possible but a local skipper adds real value if you are unfamiliar with reef navigation on the east coast.
December to April suits most sailors; those prone to seasickness on the Atlantic approach should fly in and charter locally instead.
