Dominica sits between Guadeloupe and Martinique like a dark green wall rising straight from the sea, and it makes no effort to pretty itself up for anyone. The island is volcanic, steep, and genuinely wild, and that is precisely why sailors who prefer forest to beach bar keep coming back. The Atlantic trades arrive from the east-northeast at a reliable 15–25 knots through the dry season, which means a brisk beam reach or close fetch down the leeward (western) coast and a straightforward downwind run back up it. Swell wrapping around the southern and northern headlands can make anchorages rolly overnight; Portsmouth in Prince Rupert Bay is the most settled option and the one most cruisers use as a base, with the Indian River a short dinghy ride away. Roseau, the capital, offers a cramped but functional anchorage and the Cabrits National Park dive sites are within easy reach. The champagne reef near Scotts Head — where volcanic CO₂ bubbles through coral — is shallow enough for snorkellers and genuinely strange. Sperm whales feed year-round in the deep water off the west coast; a morning trip offshore with a local operator out of Roseau is worth building your schedule around. Provisioning is limited compared with Martinique or Antigua, so stock up before you arrive. There is no major charter base on-island; most sailors position from Martinique (Le Marin) or Antigua (Falmouth Harbour) on a bareboat, allowing two comfortable day passages. Customs and immigration are straightforward for most nationalities, though you will need a cruising permit. Dominica rewards experienced sailors comfortable with moderate Atlantic swell and open-roadstead anchoring; first-timers will manage better with a skippered boat and realistic expectations about supermarket runs.
