Zoo Miami
Miami, USAattractions
Zoo Miami sits at 12400 SW 152nd St in the far southwest of the city, well away from the tourist bustle of South Beach — you will need a car or rideshare to reach it, as public transport options are limited. At 220 hectares it is genuinely vast, and first-time visitors consistently underestimate the distances between exhibits. Plan for a full day, wear the most breathable clothes you own, and treat sunscreen as non-negotiable: the South Florida heat is relentless, and shade is patchy across the open pathways.
The zoo is organised into regional zones rather than a traditional loop, and the Amazon & Beyond exhibit is the clear centrepiece — a large immersive walk-through area covering South American species including giant river otters, tapirs, and anacondas, with genuinely considered habitat design that feels less like a concrete compound and more like a working ecosystem. The koala exhibit draws steady queues, particularly on weekends, so arrive early if that is a priority for your group. The Komodo dragons in the World of Reptiles section are reliably active in the mornings before the heat builds.
Zoo Miami has a reasonable track record on conservation, participating in several Species Survival Plan programmes and maintaining breeding groups for Florida-native species. That said, some of the older mammal enclosures toward the African section feel dated, and it is worth being honest with yourself about that if animal welfare is a deciding factor.
Feeding demonstrations typically run mid-morning and are listed on the daily schedule board at the main entrance. Pushchairs handle the paths well, though the distances will tire small children quickly. Arrive by 9 a.m. in cooler months, or accept that summer afternoons are punishing.
