ZooTampa at Lowry Park sits in a residential pocket of north Tampa, about fifteen minutes from downtown, and it has the easy, unhurried feel of a regional zoo that punches well above its weight. Twenty-four hectares is manageable — most visitors cover the main loop comfortably in three to four hours — but the Florida heat demands respect. Come early. By midday in summer the paths radiating out from the central plaza can feel punishing, and the shade is patchy in the African section particularly. The standout experience here is genuinely hard to match anywhere in the state: the Florida Manatee Hospital and Rehabilitation Center. ZooTampa has been rescuing and rehabilitating injured manatees for decades, and you can watch staff working with animals that are recovering from boat-strike injuries before release back into Tampa Bay. It is one of the few accredited facilities in the US with this kind of active in-situ rehabilitation programme, and it gives the zoo real conservation credibility. The viewing area is well designed and rarely overcrowded outside school holiday periods. Safari Africa is the zoo's most ambitious habitat zone, with white rhinos, giraffes, and a solid warthog population roaming enclosures that, while not vast, are thoughtfully planted and far removed from the old concrete-trough model. The Komodo dragons have their own dedicated house and are reliably active in the morning. Feeding times for several species run between 10 and 11 am — check the board near the entrance on arrival. Pushchairs handle the paths well, though some gravel sections near the Manatee Center slow things down. Wear light clothing, carry water, and bring cash if you want the giraffe feeding station, which is well worth the few dollars it costs.
