Canada's scale is genuinely disorienting. You can wake up in a Pacific rainforest, drive across prairie, and sleep under the Rocky Mountains—all in one country. Most travellers cluster around the coasts and national parks, which means the interior stays refreshingly quiet.

The East (Toronto, Quebec City, Atlantic provinces) feels European in places; the West is pure wild. Cities are expensive but liveable; rural areas and small towns are where you'll find genuine character and breathing room. Winter is harsh but stunning if you're prepared.

Expect long drives between things. Bring a decent vehicle or be prepared to book internal flights. The landscape does most of the work—you're just navigating it.

Highlights

  1. Canadian RockiesGlacier-carved valleys, turquoise lakes, and roadside bears. Banff and Lake Louise are busy; venture further for solitude.
  2. Pacific Coast & British ColumbiaTemperate rainforests, mountain-to-ocean hiking, First Nations culture. Wetter and milder than the interior.
  3. Niagara Falls & Great Lakes regionIconic waterfall and a major natural wonder. Toronto and surrounding cities offer urban culture and access to the outdoors.
  4. Quebec City & Eastern SeaboardFrench-speaking architecture, maritime history, and coastal drives. Cape Breton Island rivals anywhere for rugged beauty.
  5. Prairie provinces & interior wildernessHuge skies, minimal crowds, and unpredictable wildlife. Better for self-sufficient travellers comfortable with solitude.
  6. Arctic & Northern territoriesAurora borealis, midnight sun, remote Indigenous communities. Expensive and logistically complex—but genuinely remote.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
July–August for reliable warmth, shorter daylight in the North, and open highways. September–October offers fewer crowds and excellent autumn colour. Winter (Dec–Feb) is for skiing, dog sledding, and aurora hunting—temperatures drop well below freezing.
Do I need a visa?+
UK, Australian, US, and most Western passport holders get 6 months on arrival. Apply for an eTA online (~$7 CAD) before you fly. Schengen citizens don't need an eTA but should check current rules.
What should I budget daily?+
$50–70 backpacker (hostels, self-catering), $120–180 mid-range (modest hotels, eating out), $250+ comfortable (better accommodation, less restraint). Cities and popular parks cost significantly more.
Is it safe?+
Yes, widely safe. Petty theft exists in major cities; wilderness safety requires preparation (bears, weather, isolation). Remote areas have minimal emergency services—tell someone your plans.
What's essential to pack?+
Insect repellent (blackflies and mosquitoes are fierce in summer), water bottle for long drives, good footwear for trails, and layers even in summer. Winter requires serious cold-weather kit. A vehicle is nearly essential outside major cities.
