The Maldives is a string of 26 coral atolls scattered across the Indian Ocean, roughly 700 kilometres southwest of India. It's not a backpacker destination—most visitors come for resorts, diving, and snorkelling. If you're after affordable travel, this isn't it. But if you can stretch your budget, the marine life here is genuinely world-class.

The country is tiny and flat. No mountains, no hiking, no "discovering local villages" in the traditional sense. What you get instead: pristine reefs within swimming distance of your accommodation, mantas, whale sharks (seasonal), and the kind of water clarity that makes underwater photography almost unfair. Most travellers spend their entire stay on or near their island resort, which is precisely the point.

Malé, the capital, is crowded and chaotic—a useful transit hub but not a destination. The real Maldives exists in the atolls: Baa, Ari, Meemu, Thaa, and the southern chains. You'll need to book accommodation beforehand; there's no walk-up island-hopping culture here.

Highlights

  1. Baa Atoll & Hanifaru BayManta ray hotspot (seasonal). Snorkel or dive in waters where mantas congregate during the southwest monsoon.
  2. Ari AtollMost accessible for independent travellers. Reef sharks, turtles, and macro life around house reefs and nearby dive sites.
  3. Southern Atolls (Meemu, Thaa)Fewer tourists, less-dived reefs, and similar marine diversity to the north. Quieter, cheaper than central atolls.
  4. Diving & SnorkellingVisibility often 20–40 metres year-round. Channels between atolls offer current dives; house reefs suit beginners.
  5. Whale Shark SeasonAugust to November, juvenile whale sharks appear in atolls. Snorkel alongside them during the southwest monsoon.
  6. Malé CityCrowded capital with colourful wooden buildings, a fish market, and mosques. A few hours' exploration is enough.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
November to April offers calm seas and sunshine. August to November brings whale sharks and mantas but rougher conditions. May to July is the wet season; fewer tourists, cheaper rates, slightly reduced visibility.
Do I need a visa?+
Most nationalities receive a 30-day visitor permit on arrival (free). Bring a return ticket and proof of accommodation. Extensions are possible but require local application.
What's the real cost?+
Resort packages dominate. Budget resorts run £60–120 per night; mid-range £150–300; luxury £400+. Food, diving, and activities are pricey. Expect £100–200 daily if staying budget.
Is it safe?+
Petty theft in Malé exists; resorts are secure. Political tension occasionally surfaces but rarely affects tourists. Diving fatalities are rare but always use certified operators.
What should I pack?+
Reef-safe sunscreen (local law), rash guard, snorkel gear (or rent). Lightweight clothes, flip-flops. Resorts have laundry but expect high prices. Medications must be declared at customs.
